A very large Moorcroft vintage plate or charger in the Hibiscus pattern by Walter Moorcroft.
The diameter is 30.7cm (12.08inch), the height 2.5cm and the weight a very impressive 1.45 Kg.
In excellent condition.
Now often used as decorative objects these large plates or chargers were originally used as table centres to protect polished surfaces from heat and spills etc. Whatever the original purpose was now-a-days they offer a wonderful opportunity for display, perhaps in an entrance hall or reception room. Their size would make them difficult to miss and combined with the iconic Moorcroft name make them a talking point for guests and other visitors.
The colours remain bright and on the dark green ground make for a very attractive item.
Regarding age, it can be difficult to assess with absolute certainty as some production runs could be quite long, and it was not until 1990 that Moorcroft began using year cyphers to show when an item was actually made.
With this plate however the style of the impressed back stamps on the base suggest a date range c1949 to 1986
The plate is clearly of genuine vintage age.
This vintage Moorcroft plate in the Hibiscus pattern is available online only however if visiting the Antiques Centre on Stonegate in central York please visit Cabinet 138 which is situated on the Lower Ground Floor to view other examples of Moorcroft pottery from early vintage pieces to more modern items.
